Obituary for Wayne Joseph Black

Wayne Joseph Black, 84, of Polson, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by three of his four daughters and his wife after a long battle with cancer.
He was born on October 23, 1929 at home in the now non-existent town in eastern Montana town of Kelly. His parents were Lynne and Gladys Black.
He attended school in Winnett and Hamilton and joined the Army at 17, and received his GED while in the Army and also later attended the University of Montana. His main occupation was carpenter and millwright but he held many other positions including Job Corp Carpentry instructor and carpentry and millwright instructor at the Vo-Tech. He retired from the University of Montana as a maintenance carpenter in 1994 and was a member of Carpenters Local #28 for over 47 years. He worked on many buildings and bridges in Missoula and the surrounding area.
On January 21, 1954 he married Ann Durkee in Missoula, Montana. Most of their married life was spent in Missoula until they became fulltime RV'ers in 1995.
He enjoyed rocking and walking with babies, holding small children on his lap and telling wild stories like "The Scraggle and the Hunk" or "Pencil Sharpener Nose".
He loved music, especially jazz and classical, poetry, philosophy, camping with his family and a good argument. He loved Montana and always cheered for the Griz.
He leaves behind his wife Ann, sons John (Janet), Lee (Sharon), Pat (Sue), foster son John Peterson (Kim) and daughters, Pauline Probert (Nigel), Victoria Black, Muriel Jo Probert (John) and Mary VonGoedert, 22 grandchildren, 16 great – grandchildren, 3 siblings and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned a later date.
