Obituary for Robert Calvin Smith

Robert "Bob" Calvin Smith, 93, died of natural causes August 13th, at home.

Bob was born to William "Luke" and Minnie Smith on September 24, 1920 in Darby, MT. In 1925 the family moved to Pablo and later settled in Polson, where he would spend nearly all of his life. Bob graduated from Polson High School in 1940 where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball and track.

In June of 1942, he moved to Seattle and enlisted in the Navy, serving during WWII, working on airplanes, often while in flight. The Navy is where he learned his electrical trade and from there he became a master electrician, opening Smith Electric in Polson in 1948.

In 1946 he married Marie McNally and they had 3 children, Lucille, Bobby, and Brian. He later married Margit Endlichhofer (nee Fehervari) who had a daughter, Isabel, and together they had 2 sons, Greg and Neal.

Bob was a member of "the greatest generation," exemplifying loyalty, self-sacrifice, and discipline. Known by many as considerate, dependable, knowledgeable, and a true gentleman, in his quiet, gentle, unassuming way, he touched many lives in the community. In recent years, you could find Bob at 4B's each morning swapping stories while sipping coffee with friends. His laughs, smile, and stories were unforgettable.

Bob loved to hunt, fish, and garden, enjoying everything outdoors. As young boys he & his brothers would explore the Mission mountains, a passion that never ceased. He was especially fond of his time in the Bob Marshall Wilderness with his son, Bobby and daughter in law, Kathy.

Bob was preceded in death by his brothers Leslie and Allen Smith, sister Jane Ryan, and nephew Don Smith.

Bob is survived by his children, Lucille (Bill), Bobby (Kathy), Brian (Julie), Isabel (Jason), Neal (Jill), and Greg. Nephews Ken (Laura), Bill (Vickie), Alan (Beth) as well as 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and special friends, the family of Pam & Brett McCrumb.

Bob was truly loved by all and had a smile and story for everyone.

Services will be held in Polson at Grogan Funeral Home, Friday, August 22nd at 2 pm. Burial immediately following, and a potluck to celebrate Bob, at his home.
