Obituary for Patricia Ann Hewankorn

Patricia Hewankorn, age 75, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at her home in Dayton Creek. She was born on October 1, 1939 at Lonepine, MT to Alexander and Josephine (Caye) Lefthand.
Like other traditional Kootenai homes, a large extended family lived together. This often included parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered as a lady who dedicated her life to working hard for her people from behind the scenes. Many benefited and continue to benefit from her influences to keep culture and traditions alive.
She started working at Headstart, then moved to Kootenai Culture Committee, later becoming the director. She received an Honorary Degree from Salish Kootenai College.
She enjoyed the "Sunday family dinners", also having all "family birthdays" at the home. Her free time was spent with crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and The Price is Right with Roman. She also enjoyed bowling for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Al, her parents, three children, Maxine, Rachel and Tuggy and brothers, Richard and Pat and sisters Marie and Edna.
She is survived by her children, Al Jr., Ceara and Roman of the family home on Dayton Creek; daughters, Geraldine of Big Arm, Josephine of Big Arm; Dolly (Sylvesta) of Elmo; son Michael of Pablo; 17 grandchildren and numerous "greats" that she loved dearly; sister Susie (Tom) Antiste of Big Arm; brothers, Joey Squeque of Big Arm and Kenny Lefthand of Elmo and Wain (Cheryl) Lefthand of Elmo.
Traditional Wake services began on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at 5:00 P.M. at Elmo Hall. A Rosary will be recited at 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 21, 2015 with burial at Dayton Indian Cemetery. Pallbearers are Joe Antiste, Adrian Hewankorn, Oskie Lefthand, Wes Lefthand, Dana Tenas and Frank Old Horn.
