James C. Sohm

April 4, 1949 — March 5, 2023

Polson

Jim Sohm, age 73, who passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023, moved on to the special promised land that was his fondest desire.

Jim was born April 4, 1949, in Havre, MT to Claire and Della (Brower) Sohm, and raised in Big Sandy, Montana. After graduating from the University of Montana on an ROTC scholarship, Jim was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army. With the winding down of the Vietnam War, fortuitously, Jim’s trip to the war zone as a Huey pilot was interrupted before it began; and after his service, he was honorably discharged from the Army and began working as a Missoula UPS delivery driver.

During all this, Jim found, and in November 1971, married the love of his life, Barbara Marshall, and soon thereafter, they were blessed with the birth of their son Jeremy and six years later, their daughter Angie. Their incredible romance and marriage lasted over 50 years, until his passing.

With hard work and tenacity, Jim was promoted from UPS driver to a management position, and over the next 30 years Barb and Jim followed his UPS career path from cities all over Montana, to Alaska and finally to Washington. Upon their retirement, Barb and Jim returned to Montana, residing in Polson, where they soon became involved in countless activities, community clubs and volunteer organizations.

Throughout his lifetime, Jim lived as a committed Christian, never speaking an unkind word of anyone. He dearly loved his Savior, his church, his beautiful wife, his sister, his children, and his grandchildren—his parents-- the foundation and touchstone of his early life and journey.

Jim passed, as he lived his life, calmly, reserved, without complaint, and only concerned for his wife and family. His was a remarkable life, incredibly well lived, with zest, humor, honor and integrity, and the fullness of love and affection for everyone he met.

Jim is preceded in his ongoing journey by his son Jeremy, his parents, Della and Claire, Dean and Joey Marshall, Susan Thompson, and many special friends.

Jim is survived by his dear wife, life partner and best friend, Barb, his daughter Angie, grandsons Jaxson and Logan, his sister Vicki, several nephews and the household boss dog, Zoie.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00, Friday, March 10, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with military honors and a reception to follow.

Memorial contributions in remembrance of Jim are suggested to the Polson Boys and Girls Club, Toys for Tots, or an organization of one’s own choosing.
