Obituary for
Fern Johnson
Fern Johnson, 64, of Polson, passed away at the home of her daughter Christine Johnson on June 7, 2011, surrounded by her family. Fern survived cancer at age 21 and her health continued to give her many challenges. Our family has been amazed that such a tiny body could fight so hard and long. Fern was lovingly cared for by Christy in her home for the last one and one half years. Her Mother, Ellen Coats, passed away on April 7th. Ellen is best known for her many years of newspaper delivery around Flathead Lake. We all remember our times with Grandma on those early morning and afternoon trips around the Lake. The summer of 2010 Ellen took a three-week trip to North Dakota to visit with her daughter Ginger, many Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. There was a gathering of five generations. She had always wanted to travel when she retired but that was not in the cards so this trip had extra special meaning for her. She spoke of that trip many times. Ellen and Fern purchased adjoining homes so they could take care of each other and grow old together. Fern suffered an aneurysm and stroke in 1998 so was very limited on the ability to be involved in caring for her Mother. Fern is survived by her children Christine Johnson, Lonny Cummings, Lafe Cummings, one sister Ginger Pfeifer, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ellen is survived by her daughter Ginger Pfeifer, seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren. Friends and family gathered at the home of Christine Johnson for a memorial honoring Mother and Daughter on June 10th. The loss of our Mother and Grandmother, two extremely strong women, is one of great sadness for our entire family but we all have wonderful memories. They are and will be missed. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family online at www.groganfuneralhome.com. Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory, Polson, considers it a privilege to care for the Johnson family.
