Obituary for Caleb H. Altig

Caleb Altig, 91, of Polson, MT, passed away on August 8, 2011. Caleb was born to William and Edna Altig on March 28, 1920 in Greenleaf, ID. Caleb was a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Caleb saw service in WWII, after which his 5 sons were born. When Caleb married his beloved wife, Lela, he adopted her youngest son, Richard, and they blended their families including her other children, Jim and Judy. Dad loved all his children and adored his grandchildren: Sandra, Brian, Theresa, Caleb, Wendy, Charlie, Bethany, Chastity, Jake, and Kimbirli. Pictures of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his touchstone for joy. He taught by example of devotion to others, church leadership, and volunteerism. His badges as a hospice volunteer, a volunteer guide at Oregon Coast Aquarium and as a Shore Acres Christmas volunteer and his love of music are the legacy he left us. Photography became his retirement career that he practiced until three years ago leaving many homes, businesses, and walls more beautiful due to his world through the viewfinder of his camera. Besides his parents and beloved wife, he is preceded in death by sisters, Betty and Myrtle: brothers, Robert, Ralph, and Francis: and sons, Gary and Ronald. Dad was granted his devout wish to 'go home to Jesus and Lela to be reunited with the rest of his family waiting for him in Heaven' on August 8, 2011, surrounded by the love of his family. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews: a brother, Kenneth (Shirley): sons, Donald (Margaret), Russell (Mark), Richard (Tina), Randy (Sheila): and daughter Judy (Butch) Shostak. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011, 11:00 AM Polson First Presbyterian followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. No flowers, please. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lake County Council on Aging, in Ronan, or to the Polson Health and Rehabilitation Center's Hospice Suite. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family online at www.groganfuneralhome.com. The staff of Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory, Polson, considers it a privilege to care for Mr. Atlig's family.
