On Monday, October 19, 2020, Brittany Alyssa Hewankorn, beloved daughter and loving mother
of three, sadly passed away at the age of 31.
Brittany was born July 25, 1989 in Ronan, MT to Al Hewankorn Jr. and Sheila Mitchell. Brittany
was a proud member of the Kootenai Tribe and community of Elmo, MT, where she raised her
three children, Sun Rose, Alec & baby Patricia. She attended and graduated from Polson High
School in 2007. After receiving her high school diploma she followed her passion to the Institute
of American Indian Arts college, NM. Upon returning home to MT she continued her education
in the study of Tribal Historic Preservation at SKC. Later she spent time working at the Kootenai
Culture Committee and The People's Center. She was known for her quick wit and beautiful
smile. She enjoyed beading and cooking especially for holidays and birthdays. There was
nothing in this world she loved more than being a strong devoted mother. She was kind, caring
and never hesitated to help out her family or friends. Her strong will and infectious laughter will
be greatly missed by those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents Malcolm “chuck” Mitchell, Aloysius Hewankron
Sr., Patricia Hewankorn (Lefthand), Dorothy Couture Smith and Emery Smith, Uncles William
“Bill” Mitchell and Miles Mitchell, Aunties Josephine Lefthand and Tommie Mitchell, Cousins
Walter Reddick, Micheal Hewankorn & Jesse Atwin.
She is survived by her children Sun Rose, Patricia & Alec. Parents, Sheila Mitchell & Aloysius
Hewankorn Jr., her only living grandparent Anna Mitchell, Sisters, Dallas Hewankorn & Ceara Hewankorn (Kristopher Mahkuk). Roman Maestas, whom she loved like a son. Several aunties and uncles. Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Countless friends she made near, far, new and lifelong.
A wake will take place Wednesday, October 21, 2020, At Elmo Community Center, followed by a rosary at 8 p.m. Funeral will be Thursday, October 22, 2020, @10 am. Burial at Dayton Cemetery.
